Baghdad: Let it Snow, Let it Snow ...

There’s little which can surprise the people of Baghdad these days but when a light scattering of snow fell this morning, everyone looked a little taken aback.

Some of the people think snow may have fallen in 1969 but some reports are saying that it’s been closer to one hundred years since the city has seen its last snowfall.

"It is the first time we've seen snow in Baghdad," said 60-year-old Hassan Zahar. "We've seen sleet before, but never snow. I looked at the faces of all the people, they were astonished.

"A few minutes ago, I was covered with snowflakes. In my hair, on my shoulders. I invite all the people to enjoy peace, because the snow means peace."

The World’s Cheapest Car: Tata Nano

Tata Motors today took the covers off the world’s cheapest car — the Nano!

Over the past year, Tata has been building hype for a car that would cost a mere 100,000 rupees (roughly $2,500) and bring automotive transportation to the mainstream Indian population. It has been nicknamed the “People’s Car.” Over the course of the New Delhi Auto Expo, which began this week, anticipation had grown to fever pitch.



The nearest priced competitor is the Maruti 800, which costs roughly twice as much as the Nano.

The Nano will go on sale in India later this year with an initial production run of 250,000 a year. Tata says it will offer the Nano in other emerging markets in Latin America, Southeast Asia and Africa within four years. (Via The New York Times)

Romania: Rushed to hospital after finding a dead mouse in his beer

A Romanian man was rushed to hospital after finding a dead mouse in his bottle of beer.

Mihai Stanescu, 32, from the town of Bacau, ended up in an emergency hospital with food poisoning.

He said: "I simply opened the bottle and took a few gulps. The taste was very strange and when I looked closer I noticed the mouse floating in my beer."

The man alerted local consumer protection officials who have launched an investigation.

Chief trading standards inspector Mihai Miclaus said: "We will check the whole batch of beer to see if there are other such cases. Then we'll contact the producer and see who is responsible for this." (via Ananova)

Via MEDIAFAX I've just found out that British punk pioneers Sex Pistols are in talks for a concert in Romania!

Event organizers Kompas Events, who have been negotiating with the band since December said a contract for a gig in Romania has not been signed, but the band had planned a European tour in 2008.

R.I.P. Sultan

Gabriel Sultan, aged 36, Art Director with Romanian news agency MEDIAFAX died on December 30 in a car crash on national road DN 7, in western county of Hunedoara.

Sultan, along an woman who was traveling with him, died instantly when their car crashed into a heavy truck on the opposite lane.

Preliminary investigations suggest tiredness as probable cause of the accident. (MEDIAFAX)
